Step 4: Prepare & Adopt the Plan

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management team is updating its Solid Waste Management Plan.

Thank you to everyone who took time to provide feedback on the final step of the Solid Waste Management Plan renewal process. Your contributions throughout this multi-year engagement have helped to shape the long-term plan for managing and reducing waste in the region for the next decade.

What happens next?

Throughout May 2026, the draft plan is being presented to the municipalities and First Nations within the CSWM service area for a final review, approval and support. In June 2026, the CSWM Board will conduct a final review of the draft plan and if approved, the plan will be submitted to the Province for approval. It can take anywhere between six - 18 months from submission for the minister to review and approve the plan.

How are we going to measure our success?

In collaboration with the Regional Solid Waste Advisory Committee and our municipal and First Nation partners, we have created targets which are achievable, have clear timelines and help to demonstrate continuous improvement towards Provincial targets. Once the Solid Waste Management Plan receives approval from the Province, a Plan Monitoring Advisory Committee (PMAC) will be established to review progress on implementation of the plan and provide feedback. The PMAC will be composed of:

  • Public Members - up to six
  • Technical Members – up to 12 members, specified experience or employment and inclusive of up to four members of local government staff
  • First Nations – up to 10 members, one per nation
  • The Co-Chairs of the CSWM Board will be the Co-Chairs of PMAC
