The Cumberland Forest: a defining feature of the Village

Valued by locals and visitors alike, the Cumberland Forest is a defining feature of the Village and the Comox Valley. To ensure its long term ecological, cultural and recreational stewardship, the Village of Cumberland has partnered with the Cumberland Community Forest Society, United Riders of Cumberland and the Comox Valley Land Trust to develop a long term land strategy for the Cumberland Community Forest Park and surrounding lands of interest.

The strategy will be created within the context of existing land covenants and will be used as a guide for future park projects, maintenance, operations, and stewardship of the Cumberland Forest:

  • Forest, creek and ecosystem health
  • Trail planning to improve community use and ecosystem health
  • Trail access and egress planning, including trailheads, facilities, and parking areas
  • Potential new staging areas and outdoor learning spaces
  • Ecological restoration opportunities
  • Cultural values, including those identified by K’ómoks First Nation

The planning process will happen throughout 2026, with public engagement via the Engage Comox Valley website and an in-person community engagement opportunity to be scheduled.

The Cumberland Forest is the informal name of the natural areas south of the Village. It includes the Cumberland Community Forest Park, a Village of Cumberland municipal park purchased with funds raised by the Cumberland Community Forest Society. The Park is protected by a conservation covenant held by the Comox Valley Land Trust.

Though the forest spans a great deal larger, this Strategy will focus on approximately 400 hectares of land adjacent to the Village. In addition to the Park, this includes lands that are part of proposed future purchases or protection efforts by the Cumberland Community Forest Society (Middle Earth and Raven’s Ridge) and other adjacent parcels of land of mutual interest to the partners for multiple values. This includes trail access and egress locations in other municipal parks, and private managed forest lands where the United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) manage and maintain trails through formal agreement with private forestry companies.

The Village is also working with the CCFS, UROC and CVLT to respond to damages and impacts of the January 2026 Perseverance Creek flood on trails, creeks and riparian areas in the Cumberland Community Forest Park and adjacent Coal Creek Historic Park.

This works includes:

  • assessing short term options for a temporary trail crossing of the creek to minimize trampling and trail braiding in environmentally sensitive areas;
  • protection of critical infrastructure;
  • and longer-term solutions for hydrologic and ecological function of the creek, wetlands and floodplain environment.
