The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the Town of Comox (Comox) announce the start of construction on Beaufort Avenue as part of the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project and Beaufort Avenue Improvements Project. Construction is estimated to start on Monday, October 7, 2024 at Jane Place with construction moving along Beaufort Avenue in two block sections.

In 2022, the Comox Valley Regional District and the Town of Comox reached an agreement to incorporate key infrastructure projects for the Town into the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project. This coordinated effort not only minimizes construction and traffic disruptions for residents but also results in significant cost savings for the Town by aligning the work with the larger project.

“Partnering with the Town of Comox on this project was important to its success,” said Director Doug Hillian, Comox Valley Sewage Commission Chair, “Finding areas where we can work together for the benefit of our community helps to improve efficiencies and reduce disruptions for our residents.”

Work for the Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project on Beaufort Avenue is expected to be completed during the fall /winter 2024, with the work for the Beaufort Avenue Improvement project, estimated to be completed late spring 2025.

Improvements to Beaufort Avenue will include upgrades to existing sidewalks and the addition of new sidewalks and crossings to improve pedestrian safety and flow. Formalized parking areas, shared bike lanes, improved street lighting and upgrades to existing utilities are also part of the improvements. “Improving accessibility and safety in our downtown core is a top priority for us,” states Comox Mayor, Nicole Minions. “It’s important that we continue to support businesses in our vibrant downtown area, including Beaufort Avenue, during and following construction.”

Businesses on Beaufort Avenue will remain open during the construction. Safe pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained throughout the project, however; parking will be limited. Residents are encouraged to use alternate forms of active transportation to help decrease vehicle traffic in downtown Comox. This is a good opportunity to try Evolve Bike Share, with locations throughout the Town of Comox, including five downtown parking zones.
