Construction Update: Comox Avenue
7 April 2025
Comox Valley Sewer Conveyance Project: Work on Beaufort Avenue continues to advance slightly ahead of schedule. The pipe will turn up Rodello Street and construction will continue onto Comox Avenue.
One-Way Traffic on Comox Avenue: When construction reaches Comox Avenue, traffic will become one-way in one to two block sections. All traffic in the construction zone will be one-way moving west, towards Glacier View Drive. Traffic traveling east, into the Town of Comox, will use a detour north of Comox Avenue (MAP 1).
Construction on Comox Avenue is estimated to span the duration of April to October 2025. There will be multiple phases of construction, including sewer forcemain work, Town of Comox infrastructure upgrades, new cement curbs and sidewalks, paving, as well as the construction of two new roundabouts at Glacier View Drive and Rodello Street. Construction will be sequenced to maximize the time that eastbound vehicular traffic can travel from Comox Road hill into Comox, and regular updates to those who live and work in the corridor will be provided.
*Please note that the schedule can frequently change. Please refer to the construction zone map on the project website for up-to-date information on daily road closures and construction zones.
Important Information:
- Construction days/times: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 8:00 pm.
- Road Closed: There will be times when Rodello Street will be closed to public vehicle through traffic. Please follow the detour signage.
- Pedestrian Access: Pedestrian access to your home and/or business is guaranteed.
- Emergency Services: Access is guaranteed. During daytime hours, if required, traffic will be stopped and construction vehicles moved to accommodate emergency services.
- Driveway Restrictions: As part of construction, driveways within the construction zone will be impacted. The construction team will communicate with impacted properties nearing the time of construction to inform you of when/if driveways will not be accessible. The scope of the work is to replace driveways like for like. Please be advised that concrete driveways/curb letdowns have a cure time of 7 to 10 days, whereby it is not possible to drive on them.
- Noise and Vibration: During construction there will be times when you will hear loud continuous noises (there may be times when a vacuum truck needs to be used and it can be very loud). You may also feel vibrations from digging as well as compacting. This can be unsettling. The vibrations are not of a magnitude to damage property.
- Please Plan for Extra Time: Drivers are advised to add extra time to their commutes, watch for detour signage, and follow posted speed limits. It is recommended that you park outside the construction zone, especially if you require immediate ability to leave in your vehicle between 7:00 am – 8:00 pm. The construction crew do their best to get residents in and out of the construction zone as quickly as possible; however, there will be times when there is a delay to accommodate moving equipment or making it safe to exit or enter.
Town of Comox Waste Collection
Please follow these procedures to ensure uninterrupted services of waste collection during construction:
- Clear Labeling: To facilitate smooth handling and return of bins, please ensure that all bins are clearly labeled with your home address. All bins have a space on the front for the address to be written in with permanent marker.
- Placement of Waste Bins: During periods when roads are fully closed, residents are required to place their garbage bins along the curb by 7:00 am on scheduled pickup days. Note that this time is earlier than the usual curbside time of 8:00 am.
- Collection by Crews: Contractor crews will retrieve the bins placed along the curb and bring them to a central location outside the road closure area for collection by the waste management trucks.
- Return of Bins: Following collection, bins will be returned to their respective homes by the end of the day.
- Private Haulers: Private waste haulers will also be provided access.
Our goal is to provide you with as much access to you home or business as possible; however, unforeseen issues may arise that require changes to our plans. We apologize if our timelines shift or plans change. Safety of residents and workers is our number one priority. If there are circumstances which require us to change our plans due to safety concerns, we will communicate them as quickly as possible.
