Construction Notice: Beaufort Ave, Wilcox St to Beach Dr

13 December 2024

We will be starting construction on Beaufort Avenue at Wilcox Street in early January. Construction will move along Beaufort Avenue in two-block sections moving west (towards Rodello Street) [MAP 1]. This will require portions of the street to be closed during the day Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 8:00 pm.

In addition to the construction of the new sewer forcemain pipe, in partnership with the Town of Comox, the contractor will also be completing necessary Town infrastructure upgrades. These include watermains, storm mains, and curbs.

Throughout the course of this project you will see three separate crews at work:

  1. Sewer Forcemain Crew
  2. Town of Comox Infrastructure Upgrades Crew
  3. Finishing Work, including curbs and paving

Sequencing of construction can mean that work on Town infrastructure upgrades can precede or follow the sewer forcemain construction. In total work may take up to six to eight months to complete. Work will not be continuous, however please be prepared for construction to start and stop until the end of summer 2025.

What you need to know:

  • Dates: Work on the sewer forcemain will begin at Wilcox Street January 6, 2024 moving west, towards Rodello Street.
  • Construction days/times: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 8:00 pm.
  • Road Closed: Beaufort Avenue will be closed to public vehicle through traffic in one to two block sections. Resident access only. Access to individual properties will change depending on construction (from East or West Beaufort Ave). Please follow the detour signage.
  • Pedestrian Access: Pedestrian access to your home/business is guaranteed.
  • Emergency Services: Access is guaranteed.
  • Driveway Restrictions: As part of construction driveways will be impacted. The construction team will communicate with impacted properties nearing the time of construction to inform you of when/if driveways will not be accessible. The scope of the work is to replace driveways like for like. Please be advised that concrete driveways/curb letdowns have a cure time of 7 to 10 days, whereby it is not possible to drive on them.
  • Noise and Vibration: During construction there will be times when you will hear loud continuous noises (there may be times when a vacuum truck needs to be used and it can be very loud). You may also feel vibrations from digging as well as compacting. This can be unsettling. The vibrations are not of a magnitude to damage property.
  • Please Plan for Extra Time: It is recommended that you park outside the construction zone, especially if you require immediate ability to leave in your vehicle between 7:00 am – 8:00 pm. The construction crew do their best to get residents in and out of the construction zone as quickly as possible, however there will be times when there is a delay to accommodate moving equipment or making it safe to exit or enter.

Town of Comox Waste Collection

Please follow these procedures to ensure uninterrupted services of waste collection during construction:

  • Clear Labeling: To facilitate smooth handling and return of bins, please ensure that all bins are clearly labeled with your home address. All bins have a space on the front for the address to be written in with permanent marker.
  • Placement of Waste Bins: During periods when roads are fully closed, residents are required to place their garbage bins along the curb by 7:00 am on scheduled pickup days. Note that this time is earlier than the usual curbside time of 8:00 am.
  • Collection by Crews: Contractor crews will retrieve the bins placed along the curb and bring them to a central location outside the road closure area for collection by the waste management trucks.
  • Return of Bins: Following collection, bins will be returned to their respective homes by the end of the day.

Estimated Schedule for Sewer Forcemain Construction and Town of Comox Infrastructure Upgrades:

  • February - March: Church Street to Ellis Street
  • March – April: Ellis Street to Willow Way
  • April – May: Willow Way to Beach Drive
